Following in the footsteps of Robin Knox Johnson, she's currently leading!

Solo, unsupported, only in dinky little old boats designed in the 80's, with zero GPS or satellite technology!

Like the original Sunday Times event, the 2022 Golden Globe Race is very simple: Depart from Les Sables-d’Olonne, France on September 4th, 2022 and sail solo, non-stop around the world, via the five Great Capes and return to Les Sables-d’Olonne.

Entrants are limited to sailing similar yachts and equipment to what was available to Sir Robin in that first race. That means sailing without modern technology or the benefit of satellite-based navigation aids.

Competitors must sail in production boats between 32ft and 36ft overall (9.75 – 10.97m) designed prior to 1988 that have a full-length keel with rudder attached to their trailing edge. These yachts are heavily built, strong and sturdy, similar in concept to Sir Robin’s 32ft vessel Suhaili.

She’s an Adventurer for sure! I met her in Rio about ten years ago, sailing a tiny old cement boat from Portugal to SA, single handed. She took the job after getting tired of all the crap she had to deal with during years of delivering new Cats, from SA builders, to destinations all over the world. She’s cycled unsupported alone through Africa as well!
It would be absolutely no surprise if she wins!

Hello seadogs,

Indeed absolutely phantastic! I do hope that Kirsten wins this real endurance competition.

My heart is split a bit since Captain Gugg is an Austrian and I always found it amazing how relatively high the contribution of my birth country to the scene of bluewater sailors is. But that is a rather private little subject...

I do not have so much blue water experience to risk a big lip here but the

@Kamanya ".... dinky little boats designed in the 80ies..."

would be my preference to go to the big waters over some modern, flatbellied, spacious, fast so called "performance cruisers".
I might want a 38 to 44 footer, yes, but still a design that fits the description for the GGR boats.
Andyes I'd have a chartplotter and GPS etc. but always a base system that can be fixed by myself.
Look at Skip Novaks "Pelagic" - all manual and mechanical.
.....sorry, I am getting carried away.

Fair winds to Kirsten, Gugg and all participants! To get through is already a VAST achievement.

Cheers, G.

That's so cool! Just uplifting to see people caring for an ideal rather than the usual selfish wants. She is clearly an inspiration!
