Minimal riding luggage?

Interesting to see bikes loaded to the ground with gear/luggage. Looks cool, but is it really necessary? On 3-5 day trips, I like to ride with as LITTLE as possible. My mates carry the tools/spares because they will do anyway. I take almost no clothes, and just a light sleeping bag, cigs, wallet, head torch, phone and that's about it. All fits into a tank bag.

What about you guys?
