Things are quiet here. Where are all the paragliding dogs?
Been having some good flying around our local sites in PE and in Sedgefield.

I do not do much flying these days. After 34 years of active flying, training other pilots, organising several PPG tours abroad and locally, flying in two world championships with Protea colours and organising several national championships, the magic has waned. I guess that exploring SA on an adventure bike has replaced that enthusiasm.

Started my training for the basic licence.
1st days ridge soaring/ walking up the dune was lots of fun in Langebaan.

2nd day had a great flight from Hermanus. The flight was great.
The landing, not so much!
Clipped a phone wire as I can in to land with the bottom of my harness.
Comedy of errors tbh, but at the end of the day you have to take responsibility for your own safety.
Wing collapsed, wire broke and I dropped like a stone.
Landed still seated, broke my wrist and now have a metal plate and some screws holding it together.

Will I continue?
Hell yes, cant wait!

I think the only thing preventing me from going to learn to do this is finances, the rig from what I have seen is quite pricey and so are the lessons, but I would still love to one day

Heal up quick Wobbler, on the bright side, at least it wasnt a power cable

Hope you're back in the air soon @wobbler .

@Mikie it costs about the same to do the license and buy secondhand gear as it costs to buy a secondhand bike these days. Of course there is always the itch for new gear like with any obsession...

Approaching max weight.... I fly my wing at 2-3kg over the top and it flies well😂😂

We tend to fly under power (with paramotor) about 40% over the placarded maximum weight of a paraglider.
This delivers superior powered performance but when the motor is off or just idling, then the trouble starts.
Yes, the increased airspeed is great… but you tend to feel the turbulence much more, and collapses tend to be much more dynamic with much more technical recovery. On the new generation of reflexed powered wings, collapses are a thing of the past, but many still fly with conventional paraglider wings under power, where the 40% overweight can quickly turn things very exciting/dangerous.

@ultraflight ja 100%, being that much overloaded on a normal pg wing could make for some wild moments if you have a collapse. I find being pretty much at or just over the upper limit on my low b makes for nice and responsive control while being very stable. I do get the odd collapse, but that is in super strong and rowdy thermic conditions. My previous wing was a gin boost which is a dual purpose pg/ppg wing with an extended weight range for ppg.

I'm super keen on getting into ppg as well in the near future.
