So I have an old bike I bought as a bit of a project.  It is turning into far more of a project that anticipated. It had been "Restored" but the more I look into it the more I find shortcuts and dodgy stuff.

While trouble shooting why it was only running on 2 cylinders, I removed the fuel tank...It sounded like a bucket of gravel inside.  So I dumped some diesel and a chain in it and started shaking....a few pinholes have developed on the underside of the tank.

Now my first thought was to chop that section out and weld a new one in....the area is under the tank and perfectly flat, should be fairly simple. But the more I research this, the more the internet tells me that I will end up in the ER if I try weld on a gas tank.    Even after it's had diesel in it? Can't be that bad can it?

Are there any other options?  Will petrol dissolve bitumen?  I was just buying some Duratape for our roof, you know that silver backed black bitumen tape, and the though occured that it might seal my tank....if only temporarily.

Sika epoxy?

It's a 38yr old bike so finding a new tank is a bit of a problem.
