Plastic vs Aluminium Panniers?

Hi there
I'm at the stage where I'm considering getting panniers for my BMW F800GS.
Basically what i would like to know is whether the BMW Vario cases are strong enough to endure a fall or whether I'd be better off getting aluminium panniers from Touratech or the like?
Are there any tests that have been dpne?
I don't mind too much that the BMW ones are side-opening.
My main concerns are cost, weight and durability.

Does anyone know what I can expect to pay?
Can anyone help me make a more informed decision?
