I'm starting this thread for the Hero's.
... for those that drop their beer after a long day at work
... for those who were intending to spend the day with the family and get called away.
... for those that come to help total strangers
... for those that will not accept any compensation either or accept just enough to cover their costs.
First there was Aquatic - and Groenie came to help
Then yesterday we were on a ride out to Memel and beyond - just Ama Ride Ride and myself. On the return journey with about 650km under the belt, Ama's bike refused to start at a filling station just outside Devon.
After trying various options, including jumper cables we gave up. Phoned BMW on Call. After holding about 4 minutes I hung up. Phoned again - again about 3 or 4 minutes. This does not seem long, but try it yourself.
Third time lucky - answers. To cut a long story short, I tell the dude on the phone that he is taking too long finding a dealer as my battery is going flat. I ask him to phone me back when he has got a solution. He phones back immediately and puts me on hold again. I wait and wait. So I kill the call.
Option 2 - Log onto Roadside assistance site - go to Gauteng option and look for closest member - turns out to be Billlbob.
I explain the situation. No problem he says - checks on his map - you are about 50km's away (actually about 65km) - gimme an hour. Just over an hour later he arrives and we load AMA's bike
BMW on Call - till now HAS NOT PHONED ME BACK !!!
We arrive at Billbob's house, he give ME petrol and will NOT accept any money from AMA
I give AMA a lift home - about 60km's and then turn my nose for home and arrive home at about 22:00 last night
BILLBOB - you are today's HERO - Thankyou
I must caution here - Mr Big has kindly started something really good, but we should not abuse it.
We also run the risk of phoning the same person everytime - due to the locality of popular riding spots.
I think we need a simple code of conduct and another way of requesting assistance.
Maybe the way Aquatic did it was the right way - he sent out a few SMS's and those that were willing/could help then phoned back.
Comments ???
PS MOD's - can you pin this please
Here we are loading AMA's bike
