I noticed a few changes for this year:
1. Dates: Not the last weekend of Nov, but now 14 - 17 Nov. Same weekend as the Cherry festival in Ficksburg. So you can leave the girls at the Festival and go check out the Roof....
2. On the Roof's website it says:
"Due to logistical reasons the 2012 event may not be as spectator friendly as the 2011 event, we have had a directive from MSA to keep spectator and service points strictly separate for safety and congestion reasons"
3. But on Rallyeraid's Website there seems to more friendliness towards spectators:
"Being part of the 5000 plus crowd expected at this years Roof of Africa and being able to have “insider trading” as to the race route will make this an awesome 3 days of Adventure biking . Its going to be three days of choices as routes will be created through the Malutis in typical Rallye Raid 1 , 2 and 3 style and joining up to catch some of the action of the Roof at the spectator points . Some may decide to do their own thing and watch more of the Roof than ride ..its up to you."
Looks like Lesotho and the Eastern Freestate are heading for a busy weekend....
Controlling the spectators, race and Rallye Raid is becoming a bigger challenge every year. Hundreds of plastic bikes all over the place and then there's all the adventure bikes. Not to mention the service crews and spectators in cars.....
We will be doing our normal quiet meandering around the area, stick to the hills, stop for a cup of tea here and there and check out what all the villagers and visitors get up to. Looking forward....
