I purchased a F650GS 2004 (2 Spark) in October 2013. Was in VERY good condition, with 14,000km on the clock. Previous owner said it was last serviced by BMW (Bavarian) on 10,000km in 2010. He ran it every now and then so as not to let it stand for too long. The battery was always left on a tender, but wasn’t holding proper charge anymore, so I decided to replace the battery and all the liquids as I did not trust 3 year old oil, water etc.
————————————————
What I did (Oct 2013):
Replaced battery with BMW OEM
Replaced brake fluid - front & rear
Replaced engine oil
Replaced oil filter
Replaced air filter
Replaced coolant (Flushed the system and gave the thermostat a good cleaning while I was at it)
Retightened and went through all the regular maintenance schedule checks.
Tyres were in OK condition, but I replaced them with new set of Anakee 2.
Chain & sprockets were worn, but still had a few km’s left, so I left them.
————————————————
A year later and the bike is now on 17,000km. Over the December 2014 holidays it was time for the next service. What I did:
Replaced both sprockets (JT) and chain (DID O-ring)
Replaced fork oil
Replaced brake fluid - front & rear
Serviced rear brake master cylinder
Replaced engine oil
Replaced oil filter
Replaced plugs
Cleaned throttle body
Cleaned air filter (was still in good condition)
Retightened and went through all the regular maintenance schedule checks.
Still to do:
Replace fuel filter / regulator (pretty damn expensive part)
Have the valve clearances checked (BMW charges a pretty penny, can I have this done somewhere else in Pretoria?)
————————————————
Now, I believe a bike is only as reliable as its maintenance. Over and above the regular maintenance stuff, what else would you guys suggest I do to keep my bike in top running condition?
Thanks!
