Anyone got comments/feedback on the suitability of a fancy Smartphone for DS biking? Ruggedness? Will it survive a camping trip? Is the GPS of any real use? Can you operate a touch screen with gloves on? Battery life?

I'm a computer programmer and now getting involved in an Android development project, so want to get myself an Android phone for personal use as well (e.g. HTC Desire). I'm a bit of a Luddite as far as gadgets go, so my cell phones have always been fairly basic: small, easy to carry in a pocket, don't care if I drop/lose it, not a great target for thieves, etc.

I've never had a GPS. What are the advantages of a dedicated unit over a good-quality phone GPS? Stronger receiver? Longer battery life? More rugged - dust/waterproof? (Never seen an iPhone mounted on someone's handlebars!)
