Johannesburg - A speeding motorcyclist killed a traffic officer on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, the department of transport said.

Spokesperson Logan Maistry said according to KwaZulu-Natal Traffic Authorities, principal provincial Inspector (PPI) Ashrina Ramklown, 33, was knocked and killed whist trying to stop a speeding motorcyclist on the N3 near Midmar Dam, outside Pietermaritzburg.

The motorcyclist also died as a result of the crash. "We want to convey condolences to the family and colleagues of PPI Ashrina Ramklown, who was senselessly knocked and killed by a speeding motorcyclist in KwaZulu-Natal earlier today [Saturday]. Our thought and prayers are with them all during these difficult moments," said Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele.

He said called for tougher punishment for road users who continue to display a blatant disregard for road rules and traffic officers.
