Thought I could share some of my experiences in this regard thus far and seek an answer to that old question which will haunt me to my grave - "is it only me?"

When I am looking for a bike, is it only me or does the supply of available bikes suddenly and inexplicitly dry up completely? No doubt that the week after I have bought a semi-decent bike the classifieds will be filled to the brim with better possibilities at half the price.

Why is it suddenly easier to find the holy grail than the specific bike that you are interested in?

Why are the bikes that I would like to consider always just outside the range of my budget? Is there some strange and universal law at work here? Something like - "Thou shall not have that bike you bum"

Why does a guy advertise a bike and then is never available for you to come and view it? Am i missing something here?

Why are some prominent websites that carry used bikes not regularly updated? Phoned one oke this morning and his bike has been sold 3 years ago. WTF.

Is there some sort of secret arrangement between cameras and bikes which says that the camera will always paint a flattering picture of the bike? Yet when you actually see it in the flesh you are amazed that it is the same bike.

At an official dealer you will only find new bikes at horrendous prices and at the bikeshop on the street corner only junk at equally horrid prices. There is nothing in-between.

Went to a bikeshop that advertised a "huge selection" of used bikes - I counted four.

It seems that there is a body of "dark matter" or a black hole out there that swallows recent model good bikes and only rarely spit them out again onto the market only to be again swallowed in an instant. Missed, for example, a good bike by a week that was traded in on a new bike at a stealership and which was, in turn,  again sold within the hour.

Why does everone's eyes glaze over when you ask them whether the bike is a grey (parallel) import, or even what model it is? Is that a trick question?

Why does everyone feel the overwhelming urge to over-value their bike?

So, does anyone out there have some comforting words for me, or "is it only me?" :'(
