So chaps, decided to briefly document what I am getting up to at the moment, more an infor sharing and since I like peering into your workshops, decided that a bit of “sharing is caring” wont go down too badly….ok, the first one who offers a hug is going to get a kick in the biscuit trap!
Its time for my annual DS tour (see link I will paste this 2morrow) and time to get my bike into DS format. See, after touring on hired bikes for a few years with my mates (my road bike is too focused for this kind of riding), I bought a written off 2006 640 Duke 2 with intention of making an Adv of sorts out of it.
Fast forward thru a few years and trip to the 2007 Isle of Man where I picked up all the bits I needed, I had already completed one successful trip on my frankenbike, nicknamed the Dirty Duke. I left her in this format and used to go play pure off-road with it. Since I am fairly average, read “piss poor” at doing that, a 140kg dirt bike was a bit much. So I bought a proper plastic bike which left the Duke sitting spare. Cue the gauteng freeway improvement programme and snarled up traffic and I soon found myself commuting to work on my beloved Tuono. This started proving expensive after guzzling a rear tyre in 3500km’s! So, I set about returning the Duke to its original format. This meant salvaging the front suspension that had been badly knocked about, a topic I covered some months ago in this forum. I imported another triple clamp combo as the original was wrecked and used the Trailtech Veypor as a dash as the KTM analogue unit was also poked and too pricey to replace. This setup has been saving me hours in traffic every morning and not an insignificant saving in tyre and fine money.
Oh yeah, and somewhere along the line I slotted an 18Litre tank as the 12 litre original was too irritating.
So, this is how she looked this eve before I started
But with 10 sleeps to go until we depart to Lesotho, I thought I best get stuck into the re-reconversion.
Tasks that need doing:
Replace rear shock and wheel for spoked rear Excel.
Replace entire front end inc forks, triple clamps, brake calliper and wheel.
Fabricate new dash plate as the first one cracked and the one that fits the Dukes original triple clamps doesn’t fit (different mounting points)
Fit screen ex Dakar 650
Fit homemade rear luggage rack that might need some repair after tie-downs got caught in rear wheel…oops!
General light service
Maybe consider aux power point for ipod charger
Maybe add some running lights, the KTM motard projector beam is like lighting your farts (brief and feeble)
Front end now off and awaiting the long travel WP’s and their triple clamps (sheesh, those handgaurds have worked for their money!)
Forks fitted with mudguard, brake calliper in but not bled.
