The (mythical?) dirt route to Cape Town

Hi all,

new to the forum, so hopefully not a lurker for much longer.

I've heard guys talk about a dirt route from Joburg to Cape Town, in which most of the trip can be completed on dirt roads with obvious exceptions being entering or leaving the two cities.

Does anyone know if such a route still exist?

I have searched the forum but could not find anything conclusive.
