I am currently in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and can only smile at the names of some of the businesses here.

Who wants to go carting?

And then you get the café where all the well behaved Aussies are hanging out...

In the olde Saudi, the norm was to segregate the single men from families. When you are single, you are not supposed to be in the presence of a non related female. So all the public places and restaurants etc. had 2 entrances, 1 for Singles and 1 for families and the restaurant will also have a barricade inside, however the Crown Prince, MBS, is slowly taking Saudi into modern times, where women are getting more and more privileges.

(Even when you are married but your wife is not with you, you are considered as a single male)

This old tradition to have the restaurants segregated is a thing of the past, however the doors remain.

Feeling a little nostalgic tonight as I sit in Riyadh with a long weekend in hand and nowhere to go. Just before I left SA for work in Saudi, I went to visit my Mother, 93 years old.
I took this picture

4 weeks later she passed away.
These pictures remind me of her, what she was and what is left.

In the KSA truck drivers are predominantly from Pakistan and they like to decorate their trucks.
Saw this the other day at work.

I just noticed now that the artist name and number is also on the back of the truck(left centre), so anyone wants to place an order give him a call.

As mentioned earlier, I was involved in another airport built in Rwanda. Fuel prices makes all Souf Efricans de moer in, but what is more frustrating is the fact that the price per litre of landlocked Rwanda is the same as in SA. This picture was taken in April 2022, the Rwanda franc was 57franc to the Rand at that time.

A bit of info on the NBIA (New Bugesera International Airport). Its a total new build, about 25 km outside of the capitol of Kigali. It will be used by Qatar Airways as a central African hub.
As Rwanda is quite a "hilly" place it took some earth to be moved to either fill or flatten the place.
The runway is 4.5 km long and the terminal will be able to accommodate 2 million passengers a year. (It really is a far cry from the other airport projects I was involved with but this is what is required in Rwanda)
A pic of a pic of the early stages of the runway

A couple more pics, you will see that the asphalt is about 20cm thick, another layer will be laid on top at a later stage, thickness I cant recall but referring back to the pic above, the shoulders on either side need to be constructed and then the final layer from shoulder edge to the other shoulder's edge to be laid with no joint between shoulder and RW. The RW is 45 metres wide with the shoulders each 15 metres wide.

Rwanda do get quite a lot of rain so the there are some serious storm water drainages to be constructed.
Between the runway and taxiway, a trapezoidal storm water drain of 3 km are being constructed. This drain transition to a double box culvert at a number of places where the RET's (rapid exit taxiways) connects the RW with the TW and thereafter its open again.

Some temporary drainage. This will be replaced with a riprap bottom natural ditch at a later stage.

As mentioned before quite a couple of wheelbarrows of dirt have been moved to either fill or cut the landscape next to the RW.
This is a valley that has been filled, at the time of this photo 1.3 million m³ of dirt have been dumped and compacted. Another 400k m³ is required to get to the correct level.
On the other side of the airport 1.2 million m³ was cut and 2.4 million m³ filled.
