Has anyone been up or down this one recently. Looking at doing it from Tiffendel to the R393 side next week

Replied to the pm before I saw this, so I'm posting it here for posterity' sake for others who may be interested.

We were warned not to do Volunteershoek due to the bad conditions experienced by someone in September 2021. Yet pass conditions change. It was super easy - actually one of the easiest (maybe the easiest) of the Ben 10 passes. The tyres that were placed on the road to halt erosion, which caused major headaches for bikers, have largely been covered by earth. The pass is steep, but really enjoyable if you do it downwards, from Tiffendel direction, with stunning view in front. Just stick the bike in first or second gear, forget the road, and look at the amazing scenery. Along with the steep slope, there are also some moerse "speed bumps", hence keep the speed down or else you may see airborne bikes.

But...in line with the whole story about passes changing all the time, it may change by the time you get there. Who knows. One bad rain spell and all bets are off. We learnt that the hard way. The Tenahead Tiffendel Traverse turned into one of the most difficult of the passes for us (maybe even worse than Bastervoedslaan); not due to technicality (although there was one steep climb), but due to the conditions on the day: rainy, which turned it into a mud mess and bike ballet.

We were there in Dec too, between xmas and newyear's when the rain took a break. Pass was in good condition. But, it rained heavily again after we left so no guarantees.

I see I didn't specify when our trip was: not in December, but April this year. We were in Rhodes area between 16 and 22 April. It was very chilly, but we were generally lucky with the weather. It only rained on some of the days, but when it did rain, it increased the difficulty on a logarithmic scale. The Tenahead Tiffendel Traverse (TTT) should have been fine, with just one tricky uphill, but the rain added a new dimension, placing it almost on par with Bastervoedslaan in terms of "the struggle is real" factor. Baster was a challenge, but the mood was positive. TTT with rain was just plain scary, since our group had two relatively eina offs as a result, along with all the worry that comes with expecting more of the same. The pics below are of a very wet TTT.
