South African enduro champion Wade Young suffered serious facial injuries during an incident in a Margate night club in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The Paddock teenager, who recently won his second Roof of Africa title, was allegedly struck with a bottle in the face by an unidentified Indian male in Koko’s night club and sustained a deep cut to the chin and mouth.
An assault charge with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was laid shortly after the incident.
Young has since been treated by a Hillcrest plastic surgeon.
Police are set to investigate video footage of the incident.
Young, who shot to prominence at just 16 years of age when he became the youngest ever winner of the Roof of Africa, enjoyed his most successful racing season to date this year, making history both locally and abroad.
The 18-year-old prodigy won the King of the Hill in Romania, became the inaugural winner of the Red Bull Braveman in Namibia, placed third in the Red Bull Romaniacs (thus becoming the youngest rider to ever earn an overall podium place in the extreme enduro), won both the Enduro X Cup and Bregring X Rodeo in Germany, finished fourth in the Red Bull Sea to Sky in Turkey, clinched his second consecutive national enduro championship title and capped the year with victory in Africa’s extreme enduro in Lesotho.
