Wear Knee pads over or under riding pants?

Hi I was just wondering how many guys wear their knee pads over their riding pants? I find they are pretty uncomfortable under my Xkulcha enduros? Also not too impressed with the knee protection built into the pants, so I tend to look like a chop. is this advisable?
