Welding gloves

Saw an oke the other day with pig skin welding gloves over his normal gloves, supposedly for protection against the cold...

Does that work? Leaving for swazi tomorrow, between winter gloves (expensive) and welding gloves (R40).
I'm willing to bite a bit of a bullet and take a bit of cold, obviously to some extent.
