I'm hoping that this discussion might lead to more clarification regarding what a "Newbie/Noob/Novice" per definition for purposes of DS riding might be.

The aim of this discussion is to get more Noobs/Novices involved in riding and forum discussions.

Funacide called me a sadist when I suggested the muddy canal route is newbie friendly.  (I'll post something later on what a sadist Funacide is  )

I must confess that that particular planning thread was maybe a bit over the top and might have resulted in members not joining.

So. When are you a noob/newbie? When you have never ridden a bike before? (Road and/or DS)

Or is it you have ridden a bike 20 years ago for 3 years (school days), got a bike recently and is starting again? Would that not be "Novice"?

What about quad riders moving over to bikes? Newbie or Novice?

I see Noob/Newbie as someone that only recently got a bike for the FIRST time in their life. I would very carefully include quad riders in this classification. (First time quad riders. With no previous bike experience, that is)

I see a novice as someone who has ridden a bike previously, road and/or DS (not matter the time gaps inbetween) but must have ridden it for extended periods. This meant you did aquire the general skills to ride a bike and those type of skills do not go away over time. Almost like bicycle/cage riding. You never really loose the general skill. Just became rusty over time but you will adapt quicker than a complete Newbie.

I am a firm believer in going out there and attemting it. I do not have the luxury to pick my rides. This resulted in me riding with much more experienced and skilled riders and MAKING it. Yeah. Slow, different and mostly wrong techniques and not without the odd off but still going where they went. There is no shame in turning around or riding the easier track. Even if you attempt sand for just 10 meters, you will have achieved more than staying at home.

In the time I have ridden with forum members, I have not ONCE felt that they were looking down on me or any other fellow noob/novice. They were always there to give a sincere hand or word of advise. Yeah. You WILL have to endure laughing at funny incidents, so get that one out of the way. Don't take it personally.

I believe most riders under-estimate their ability. You do not have to be an experienced MX/Enduro rider to ride where we ride most of the time. You will be surprised what your ability is. Some determination and a positive mind set is all you need.
