Whats pants do I buy?Road pants or motocross?

My pridicament is this.I want to do off rd etc But what happens when your riding on road?
So what I thought was ill get some  good thick motocross pants and wear some baggies underneath them so if i wipe out on road it should save me from the roasties.
What do other adventure riders do or opt for?
