Kawasaki KLR 650
I have an old KLR 650, a '94 model.

It gives no problems other than the fact that it uses an unbelievable amount of oil - about 500ml consumption every 100km or so. The consumption seems to be worse the harder I ride it. When I use thicker oils (like 25W-50 or SAE40) the consumption decreases a bit

I have taken it to some friends who all seem to know alot about bikes and some have said its the rings, others have said its the valves and some have said its both.

What baffles me though, is that it doesnt smoke too much, except at startup. Surely if its burning up that much oil, there would be plenty of smoke?

The mechanic I normally use has also told me its the rings and that I will need a re-bore, which will set me back about R5k.

I am thinking that ultimately a re-bore and new rings will be in order, but I want to know for sure that this is the reason for the oil consumption before I shell out that kinda dough.

Any advice?

Has anyone experienced similar problems?
