I have a bit of a curve-ball here, and wonder if any of you have some advice.
I have a 2007 XChallenge, 51k km on the clock, mostly problem free, first owner.
It was serviced in the past week by a BMW dealer, and they also replaced steering bearings and the waterpump kit.
After the service, I topped up the tank, and did some 60km highway without any issues.
The evening I was cruising happily on a bumpy dirt road when the engine just cut out completely. It seemed as if I was running out of fuel, but I still had an almost full fuel tank. It seemed like the engine did not get enough fuel, or was not getting enough fuel pressure.
It did not seem like a electrical problem. The ignition would light up bright, the engine started easily and strongly every time, but would cut out after 10-20 secs, with or without throttle. I tried that +- 10 times, and it happened consistently. Eventually I had to be towed in.
Symptoms I experienced during the last week (before the service) which might be related:
- A few times at highways speeds on constant throttle, engine power would blip momentarily. This never happened before. It happened 3 times over a few days while I was on reserve, once with a full tank. I thought it was a dirty fuel or fuel filter. BMW checked for dirt/ water in the tank during the service but did not find anything.
- I also thought I felt some surging at constant throttle highway speeds, something I am not used to on this bike.
- BMW changed my battery during the service (recall). They shouldn't have changed it, because I had a new Toplite Yuasa installed 2 months ago (so they will swap it back).
Currently the bike is back at BMW
- they can reproduce the stalling issue
- it still has the new BMW OEM battery in
- they checked for moisture in the electrics, nothing
- they checked fuel pump and fuel pressure, no problem
- no fault codes
Any ideas?
Thanks
Oh yes, I ran out of petrol early Jan, (fuel pump ran dry for maybe 3-5 secs) but I cut the power as soon as the engine stalled. No issues afterwards.
