About a month ago I bought a 1999 XR600R. The previous owner did a little "offshore drilling" and his girlfriend found found out. Apparently she was so peed off, she put sugar in the tank. Anyway, by the time i got it, it had new pistons, rings, bearings - the whole nine yards. The body and suspension were in very good nick. All I did was put on an Ascerbis long range tank.
Now, I've owned lots of bikes (more than 20 I think), but this bike just continues to impress me (given its age and what I paid for it). It can cruise at an indicated 130km/h, but more importantly, you can really pin this bike on dirt roads. The power is very linnear, and the suspension is amazing - surprising considering the age. I've owned 2 KTM 640's (1 Enduro & 1 Adventure) and I must say, I think this XR will whip either of them on rough dirt tracks.
Maybe, it is just this particular bike, but I suppose there is a reason why it was the King of Baja for so many years. I almost bought a XR650L, and I'm so glad I didn't now, although an electric leg would be nice. This bike is a keeper.
