Get a second rear!
Then you can have the commuting Dunlop Scorpion one on for when you want to beat the tar to work. Then, in less than 3 minutes you can put the Michelin Desert knobbly on that is just a waste and less safe for the commute. You get to use the tires for what they were designed.
I have a pretty well worn rear that with a little love can become your offroad rim, saving your nice current one from getting dinged too badly when you scare the two smokes on the weekend.
