The Cape Endurance Rally (CER) will be held on Saturday 5 March 2011 all across the Western Cape in association with Think Bike. This is not your normal bike rally, but rather a riding rally. The intent is to get you riding, perhaps a little further than what you normally do, on interesting roads, possibly to places that you have not thought of before, or perhaps that you may have passed in the past without noticing. While this inaugural version is not specifically geared to DP bikes, nothing prevents them from participating and taking shorter routes via gravel.  ;)

The Cape Endurance Rally is like a treasure hunt on two wheels. Each participant will receive a list of bonus locations with clear instructions. You can earn points by going to a location and perform whatever task is provided in the instructions (mostly answering a question). The bonus locations are spread out across the Western Cape and there are way more of them than what you can visit in the allotted time. Participants must therefore plan their ride carefully ahead of time and decide which ones to visit and which ones to skip. The person with the most points at the end of the rally will be declared the winner. However, the winner will receive nothing other than a certificate, the admiration of his or her peers and loads of fun getting there (which is just about what all the other participants will be receiving too :)).

Don't be mistaken, this is NOT a race. There are strict rules against speeding and it will be the smartest rider that will win, not the fastest. It is an endurance rally, so you will have to be prepared to spend some time in the saddle. However, there is also a rest bonus so you can earn points while resting. On the other hand, you might decide you don't care who wins, you just want to participate for the fun of it and see where the Rally Master is sending you.

This is a 2-in-1 event so you can either enter the 12-hour version, or if that sounds a bit long, the 8-hour version. In other words, you either have 12 or 8 hours during which to collect points. The 12-hour version starts 6am and the other at 8am on the same day. The start is at the Bellville Stadium/Velodrome and the end at the old Franschhoek station, where we will have an after-rally dinner during which the winners will be announced. Participants will also have to be available for registration, an odometer check and rider's meeting early evening on Friday, 4th March 2011.

The rally entrance fee will not be more than R120. This pays for the rally material (including a pin) and your Saturday evening meal (there will be a cash bar). This is a limited entry rally – only the first 30 entries will be accepted. However, you cannot enter yet - the official entrance requirements and procedures will be announced in the near future, after which it will be first come, first served.

More information will be provided over the coming days and weeks, but in the meantime, keep your calendar clear for Friday evening March 4 and Saturday March 5, 2011.
