Anyone recently drove the R31 between Kuruman and the Kgalagadi via VanZylsrus? Is it drivable currently? Going that way in 2 weeks in Hilux.

Last year I did a trip from Pretoria to Knysna via dirt. There and back was 5,000ks. But I found that more than 400ks on dirt for a single day becomes a challenge. I wasn't trying to see how quickly I could get from a to z but rather to enjoy the ride and the scenery. Averaged about 60k/h. But...

Suzuki VStrom 250. I got one and it does 120 easily. Gets up to 45km/l around town. R60000. Bloody hard to beat. I'm taking it for a 7000k trip through Namibia later this year. And it does off-road too. Done several multithousand km trips off-road and no problems.

Seems like dirt kills a chain and the reason is plain to see.

I know. Incredible but true! Was an NC700X. Was stolen at 89000k just after I replaced the chain and sprockets. On a F650 I got nearly as good with a Scott oiler. Can be done. I only used ATF on those bikes. All on paved roads though. On dirt I don't get much more than 20k on a chain - doing...

I don't lube my offroad chain at all and it lasts as long. If you calculate the cost of spraying it comes almost to a new chain. So I stopped. On my road bike I use oil. Have done close to 100,000k on one. Use a toothbrush to apply and wipe off every 500k.

My experience was that it sounded like it was falling apart so I stopped using it on dirt. Might only be a perception. The suspension was very hard and you had to go slooow. Maybe look at different suspension and 21" front wheel? Will cost an arm and a leg though.

My total luggage is 80 litres for longer trips. If you go over 100 cut back. Weight is about 30kg. Food: I skip breakfast and lunch and braai a steak for supper. Love travelling but border crossings take the fun out of it. On 2023 we travelled East Africa and ended up doing 13 border crossings. They try to make it as frustrating as possible so you will hire an agent. You have to pay him and that money oils all the hands there. Takes hours for two stamps...
