I think that the new eTrex Legend with expandable memory (min SD if I remember correctly) will be just fine. I think that they are a good basic unit and good value for money. New SA Streetmaps 1 takes about 87.5mb of memory and has an auto routing function. Some dirt roads and it gets updates...

Try putting the headset into "high boost" mode (in the manual). I find that it works quite well.

Quite a few of us have. I mounted mine on the left side of the handlebar using the bracket that comes with it. You don't need any other brackets. Ran the cable to the auxilliary plug and used a hella type connector. That way you won't forget to switch it off and run the battery flat.
