    KLR with raging thirst.

Hello! Sorry for not keep you updated on this one. Here are some pictures of the CDI & ignition coil: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-JOfaC_1_Ybw/T8NJgO5GbRI/AAAAAAAAEXw/ipanHfBH90s/s640/p1070792-1000.jpg...

    KLR with raging thirst.

Reached Lilongwe (malawi), so still going. However, still weak. The choke really is functioning normal. The carb has no leaks, holes or other problems. I've done some pilot screw adjusting, but with no result. Well, the bike might be a bit faster now. But the consumption still is the same...

    KLR with raging thirst.

Hey hey! I've just arrived at bulawayo. Last week I've been on a boat trip in botswana and on the road not having time to do anything on the bike. I don't have a workshop here, but I'll check the carb & choke again. Valve timing is correct (T mark& lined up arrows), so are the cam sprockets...

    KLR with raging thirst.

Found internet@wimpy! :) Bike still runs very rich, black spark plug& smokey. Runs too slow and fuel consumption is 1:14 (or even a bit worse@1:13,5) The rev-counter doesn't work, no problem by me, but can it be that this is because of a bad/damaged CDI which also causes the bad performance...

I'll go and look for a 145. This number wasn't in stock.

    KLR with raging thirst.

We have to see if the performance and consumption really changed... About the valves: there were no other shims, so can't change them. So measuring again cold would not change this (that is part of being on the road) Mechanic is fine over there! Don't be to hard on him. I would recommend him...

    KLR with raging thirst.

Just got back from the workshop and ... the timing belt was wrong. Both cams were aligned, but the TDC was one tooth wrong. Now the valve timing is correct again. The valve clearance: Left out: 0.15 Right out: 0.18 Left in: 0.13 Right in: 0.10 These measures were taken with a warm engine since...

    KLR with raging thirst.

Jup, I've been watching youtube movies about it and know where to look now. As far as I understand it's not possible to changethe ignition timing on a klr. On the klr 650 forum they also mention timing and valve clearence, but also to check the fuel level at the float bowl.

    KLR with raging thirst.

I'll put the 148 jet back tomorrow. I also will check the timing and valves.  At this moment the original exhaust is back on. I hope to find and solve tomorrow. I'll keep you updated!

    KLR with raging thirst.

I've just been to Bike and Quad Clinic in Windhoek (great shop and nice owner) and had a look on the bike. The bike runs too rich on fuel (very black spark plug already). He did not have a look at the timing belt, but said that it definitely is not the timing. Also the mixture is too rich, a...

    KLR with raging thirst.

Hey there. Just arrived in Windhoek and tomorrow we'll go to the Kawasaki mechanic. For the record: fuel consumption didn't change so far (best is now 1:21 going  50kmh average), but average is still around 1:14,5. I'll let them check the timing. This bike has the doohickey done. Is it possible...

    KLR with raging thirst.

Thanx everyone for your replies! I'm driving the KLR now. It has been to Motor World in Upington (nice guys) and they said that the carb is wrong: needle & needle jet need to be replaced, there is too much play in them. This is probably because there has been an (open) aftermarket exhaust on it...

WANTED: Travel bike with panniers in March/beginning of April

That is quite a list! Thanx. The Kawasaki KLE400/chopper is not really the type of model I want. The others are indeed possible. I rather have a complete bike so I wont have to get looking for (expensive) panniers. My experience is that as a foreigner in a different country it is difficult to...
