The cylinder head gasket was blown. Replaced that and the rings at the same time, really was in 2 minds on whether I should have done piston too but piston was well within spec.

Some feedback after another attempt last night. Replaced the coil with one on loan, no difference. Because I had to remove quite a few body panels to get to the coil the barrel and head were clearly visible for inspection. Upon cranking I found that there was a tiny bit of oil coming out...
