What determines a bike's service intervals?

+1 The Dakar is a ridiculously reliable machine. Mine didn't us  a drop of oil in all my time of ownership – in fact not a moment's trouble that would leave you stranded – it's like the Toyota Hilux of bikes Hijack off

Arai kakai. IMHO it's the rip-off of the decade. If you can bear a few weeks of ear-ache, the BMW Enduro is much better for a grand or two less; even better: a road-helmet sans peak for touring.

Is it just me, or does it look strangely like an oversized Dakar? Never seen one before myself.

How to massacre 3 F800GS's through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya... and then...

Wow the trip looks awesome; but 21 punctures, phew! Bet they wished it was tubeless.

I'm very tall and I look right over the Givi screen. I find it noisier than the standard screen somehow (probably cause the wind is deflected onto the helmet), but it gives great wind protection for the body – you don't have to hang on for dear life at speeds over 160.

Take a few hours and practice in the comfort of your garage one day, or visit one of the forum tech days – you'll be glad you did when you get that puncture in the bundu.

I carry a loose socket wrench and the required sockets in the tankbag – very handy as I repaired my first puncture EVER on a bike yesterday. Four bikes previously and many dirt trips it happens on the big 800 for the first time. That rear bead is a bitch to break by yourself, I broke a good...

Just check that front washing out up; in fact it's not even on the ground – blerrie lewensgevaarlik I tell you. These bikes are so dangerous, you're lucky the chain didn't swing round and strangle you  :pot:

Are You SURE you want to keep your BMW 800GS?????

Currently have Maxxis on the rear, Karoo T on front, I'm patiently waiting for the Heidenau 150's to arrive. Before this I had a Karoo T rear which lasted only 3000km and one trip to Lesotho – very nice grip in mud and SAND (oops did I say that again?  :-\) while it lasts.

Are You SURE you want to keep your BMW 800GS?????

That's exactly what it is – a great all-rounder. It still has me grinning riding to work in traffic, gunning down the freeway or powersliding in sandy bends (did I say SAND??). Rear tyres don't seem to last long though  >:D

My fuel gauge seems pretty accurate. The range estimator is pretty spot on too if you keep a constant speed. I got 346 kms on one tank in Lesotho, with range meter estimating another 40kms, but I was nursing it along at 80km/h for the last leg. Anyone run out of petrol completely and check the...

Are You SURE you want to keep your BMW 800GS?????

It's been said on this forum a hundred times over; there is no perfect DS bike. Some lack power, some suspension's too hard, some seats are too soft others too hard blah blah. I enjoy my 800GS on road and dirt, fast and slow. Just this weekend I came back from a long hard ride and thought to...

    Why the BMW 650 Dakar?

+1 on every point. Get on and ride around the world – I never had a hickup in three years of ownership. Get the heated grips, it makes you use the bike much more in winter (or maybe I'm just a sissie).

Great pics, a purposeful beast in it's natural environment.

Do you want some extra cheese with that?

Maybe they should call it the Gone Soft challenge. Sigh, that kind of adspeak makes me naaaaar.
