On my 04 1200, the flange which secures the rear wheel and rear brake disc some how got some cracks on all the lugs securing the rear brake disc. It is not a common problem and from the things of it seems to be 04 specific, not confirmed. It is suspected that it is either a design fault or metal fatigue.
This is a safety critical item and on a bike like this must never happen. BMW SA will not enter into any goodwill gesture from their side. You need to take the rear wheel off and inspect the flange properly. If you intent buying a 1200GS/GSA let the seller/ dealer take off the rear wheel and confirm it does not have cracks on the lugs as this item will cost you R2800 to replace.
Interestingly BMW have modified the flange in some way and the original part number has been superceded with this new part number: C33.11.7.699.631
If you intend buying a 1200, make sure you check the flange play on the bike, it seems the flange crack and play on the splines are because of the material they used to manufacture the flange. Most 04's and 05's will have this problem!
Typical, BMW will just keep the f... quiet and not tell people there's a problem. Thank goodness for the net, at least the rest of the worlds bmw owners can sort it themselves. Maybe BMW themselves do not know about the problem.
