My wife and I both ride so I bought this bike in Feb 2021, and she took over my 800GS.
It turns out that we don’t ride together as much as we thought we would and it’s unnecessary to have two bikes. (less than 4000km done on each bike last 3 years) I’ve had the 800 for 10 years and still love it, so this one’s gotta go.
Bike was due to for a service, and I want to sell this bike with a clean conscience so just had it serviced at the agents today. R6k. All oils and fluids replaced. Mileage currently 94670km.
I never had any intention on selling this bike so didn’t mind spending on doing what needed to be done. In the 9000km’s since I’ve had it, I’ve done the normal regular and a lot of extra preventative maintenance. Only serviced/worked on by the BMW Specialist Indies Alf from Kraaifontein, Jandre from JK Works and serviced today by Donford BMW.
Done the following in additional to normal stuff since I've had it:
Extra’s fitted:
- Head light/oil cooler cover
- Spot lights (not the best quality)
- Side stand extender
- Bigger foot pegs
- Great sounding Remus exhaust
- Crash bars
- Plastic Panniers (not in the pictures)
- National Luna smart charger charging cable (so it’s easy to plug in and charge battery)
- Desert Fox handlebar bag
-Motoradical top box available (for R2k extra)
Honesty section:
- The toolbox cover under the seat is missing
- ABS bypassed (I investigated in fixing this, but it seems it wasn’t the greatest system to start off with so left it as is)
- Heated grips not working. Never bothered with it (the new grips fitted are heated grip compatible if you want to fix it).
- Indicators sometimes flash fast even though they are working fine. Seems to be a common problem.
- Gear indicator sometimes showing incorrect gear. Only first few minutes when cold, then all good.
- I had an issue with lights not working and Jandré from JK Works fixed the wiring for me. He didn’t charge me and said I ideally need to redo wiring, but it’s been 2 ½ years and all is working as it should, so I never bothered.
As said, just serviced at Donford BMW and license disk renewed until 31/10/2025 so you don’t even have to pay that.
This is not a new bike and when inspecting the bike up close you will see the wear and tear and scuff marks etc but if you stand 2-3m away the bike presents very well.
I think R40k is a fair price for what you’re getting, and all the preventative work done. This is a sorted bike that you can just get on and ride. No comments from Donford about clutch or driveshaft needing attention and I can't detect anything untoward when riding.
I also learnt today why I love the BMW Motorrad brand so much. It’s more than just the bike - they also do a lot to “bring you into the brand”. When it came to paying, the service advisor said that there is a campaign on my bike. There was some modification to the Motronic system, and they need to replace some plug. Because it’s an old campaign they don’t have it in stock, but they’ve ordered it, and it should be there next week. Then I can just pop round to fit it. Can you believe this on a 24-year-old bike? Colour me impressed.

- Replaced fan belt
- Replaced fuel filter
- Replaced some of the brake fluid hoses (Alf said the rest were fine)
- Replaced battery with BMW unit (they were the cheapest!)
- Replaced the windscreen with an acrylform one (old one had lots of fine cracks)
- Fitted updated cam chain tensioner on left cylinder
- Fitted new hand grips (similar to the originals). Heated grips combatible version.
- Fitted rear carrier support brackets
- Fitted throttle controller (the plastic cruise control thingy)
- Replaced gear lever rubber with original part
- Replaced cover above throttle body on right side (mine was faded and looked bad)
- Serviced front forks as they were leaking (replaced oil, fork seals and dust cover)
