Guys maybe I am thinking way to far outside the box...feel free to slap me back in!! ;)...I am busy with my project bike and would like to get a little bit more meat in my rear shock spring. I am no lightweight at 115kg . Now I remember getting a 11.5 kg/mm rear coil spring upgrade for my XR650R whose stock spring was only 9.2 kg/mm. Also my front springs from a 0.43 kg/mm to 0.53 kg/mm, it made a huge different offroad for me.
Now my 660R rear spring for my weight I am sure needs some 'meat" .(by the way does anyone know what the stock rating is the standard spring??) If I use the Racetech calculator which puts my weight , fuel tank size, riding ability , general terrain...I picked dirt here to cover the most extreme....I put all these parametrs into the calc it comes up with a ...you guessed it a 11.5 kg/mm coil spring!! Now try find one in the Vaderland...only can find imports at around R1500+.
So.... now I climb out the box....start phonong around...I find a company here in Bokburg that make automotive springs for the offroad specialists etc. I give the guys a call and put my dilemma to them. The answers were: yes we make progressive springs and linear, yes we can make them to a specific Kg/mm rating , yes we can make to a specific size and custom to what you need. Now I am happy...but heres the kicker....I ask the guys ...ok, what will it cost me thinking if a bog standard rear coild spring at a bike shop or dealer is going to put me back R1500 then a  "custom spring" will cost close if not more....no my friends...ball park figure is R95 - R150 !!!!! Sheez even if it s horrible and does not work for R100 it was a good try!! I didnt talk fork springs yet but I dont see those been much different in price and you can make them progressive...set then according to your weight/ fuel weight/ type of riding etc. Racetech calc will tell you what weight class to use. All we need is the dimensions of the original spring. ....hey its worth a try...I am going to try it for sure. :ricky:
