Been looking for a Dakar style screen that would meet the following criteria:
1. Remove the buffeting from the std screen being over 6ft.
2. Price that would not slay the bank balance too much below zero...
3. Possibly carbon fibre
Now I know there are screens out there imported costing around R1k-R1.3k and are fibreglass. Genuine carbon fibre (not carbon look alike) I have not seen and am sure they will fetch a hefty sum anyway if there are.
So this led me to thinking about getting a pattern aka a mould made and spend the money to develop it and see if we can get a well-priced local one.
Today picked up the draft pattern and just finished installing to go test.
I decided to use a donor screen thanks to Brenton from Autocycles :thumleft:, then cut it down at 50mm to create the “Dakar” styled lip. Then use lightweight body filler to hone a nice curve. I will probably still trim the top corners but want to "wind test" it first.
Now I need to go test this so I can see if it meets the criteria of eliminating the buffeting.
So far it has cost me R456-00 product to get here so far. I will keep you all appraised of the final cost of the mould. I’m thinking about R2k at the end of the day….
Sorry pics with the cell but it's the idea.
