Kalahari rally 2018. And why I wanted to race it

I decided to do my first rally with a support crew consisting of 2 friends who came a long. They assisted by servicing my bike at knight (air filter cleaning , chain lube , re torque most bolts and nuts) and filling bike with fuel for next day. I could then focus on going for a shower , eating dinner and then marking tomorrow’s roadbook that could take up to 2 hours to do. I carried a lot of extra spares but never needed them. Everybody I spoke to about tyres for rally said there was only one tyre to use , Mitchellin Desert Rally tyres. I did  almost 2500km’s on them and they are still in pretty good condition, so completing a rally on a single set of tyres is doable as long as you do not cut/damage them.

Reading your story now I realise that you and I rode that first GXCC mostly together and pitted together. It was also my first and I was on my own that day. Your pit crew really looked after me

Its great to hear that from that point you actually entered and finished the Kalahari Rally. Gives me inspiration that I oculd one day do it!!.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. HSK and I were there to spectate the super special and it looked like the rally was very well organized. Been hearing really good things and hoping to also enter the next one if all goes well I did wonder whether 701 or my 500 would be better suited, but from what you wrote I think the 500 will be first prize.
