A bit confused...fitting an external power point

Read through many pages now on installing standard lighter plug on the bike.. But now I am even more confused!    :lamer:
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.. Going to buy a standard lighter plug from where ever (are there different types?). Then 15amp fuse and connect the whole thing directly to the battery.  :-\
Does this thing have to earthed then?
Would really appreciate any help out there!
