ADVENTURE motorcycles have outsold Sportsbikes in the UK so far this year.

The Adventure Sport category is up 30% this year with 8,990 units sold, compared to 6,916 during the same period in 2011. The Supersport category has sold 8,548 units so far this year, a 4.1% decrease on 2011.

1,103 motorcycles were sold in the Adventure Sport category in July this year, a 13.9% rise on the same month last year. The most popular motorcycle in the Adventure Sport category in July was the Triumph Tiger Explorer 1215, selling 89 units.

Although the Supersport category sold 1,270 units last month, up 13.5% on the same period in 2011, the figures are not quite what they seem. The Supersport category includes all sportsbikes but the figures are skewed as 125cc motorcycles like the Yamaha YZF-R125 - which was the number-one seller in July, selling 186 units out of the 1,270 - are also included in this category. 125cc 'sportsbikes' make up a large proportion of sales in the Supersport category.

If the trend continues for the rest of 2011, Adventure Sport motorcyles will easily outsell Supersport machines. Is this a sign that 30 years of sportsbike worship are coming to an end and that we, like our European cousins, favour Adventure and Naked bikes over Sportsbikes?
