So, as you know, Karl has bought Basset's Funduro. A bit of background - First off, karl and I have been good mates for a while now, secondly, I've been hassling Karl for about 6 months to get a bike, and, particularly, a DS bike. So needless to say I was as excited as he was when the day arrived. Also important to note, is that Karl has never owned or ridden a bike!
So, without further ado, this is how we spent our Saturday...
First, we picked up the bike from Basset...
...and rode it (me) over to Karl's place, where we admired it a bit.
Then of course some photos of the happy new owner posing on his new toy...
...and practicing his go fast pose.
Wifey was also very happy about the bike (which is always a good thing!).
Enough of the admiring and posing, we were off to get Karl kitted out. First stop was Trac Mac bellville (the closest) where we got a M2R jacket and Airoh S4 helmet (both very popular here on Wild Dogs). Then we headed over to Bike Stuff to price the M2R upgrade kit and top boxes, then it was over to some shops in town until we finally found a pair of Richa Magma gloves at Motorcycle Toys (or whatever it's called) in town. Lastly, we made a quick stop at Atlantic Motorrad, so I could introduce Karl to the people he'll be buying spares from
Here's Karl all kitted out. Note how all his kit matches. Let me remind you this is my buddy who gives me stick whenever I get a new piece of gear (or go mad over a new piece of gear - I have GAS I can't help it - Gear Acquisition Syndrome).
Does my butt look big in this? :toothy12:
All I got was stickers for my helmet
Moving on... now that he had all the kit, it was off to a (bumpy) field near his place to start the training! I have no idea how to teach someone, so I taught him the basics (where everything is, good riding position, look up, etc) and we started by getting him comfortable with letting the clutch out and letting the bike roll, then we brought the throttle into it, and, eventually, I had him riding massive figure of 8s on the (bumpy) field.
Starting out small...
...and very quickly getting the hang of it. :thumleft:
Looking good...
...until...
His first off! A little bit of sand in between the grass plus a smooth back tire equals Karl's first off! Smiles all the way, he was soon back up and riding...
...and looking confident again.
"It's going well honey! I, uhm, dropped the bike though". No karl, you fell
And that was it for the day. We'd got the bike, got the kit, taught him to ride, and he had his first off. Not bad for a day's work. I was ready to take Karl out on the road, but wisely he's decided to wait. He'll spend the week practicing around his complex, and next weekend maybe him and I will head out on the road for the first time. Fast learner, awesome attitude, and always smiling. My buddy, karl!
You did me proud bro!
:hello2: :hello2: :hello2:
