Just a word of advice. Let the 1200gs have the valves replaced asap. It is posible that the cooling effect of the water sucked into the engine can cause the valves to crack. It might be fine now but later on a valve head can/wil break off causing a much higher repair cost than a valve replacement.

Around quarter to 7 the GS was alive again - albeit not sounding completely healthy. John then drained the oil, then flushed the engine with a mix of Diesel and Oil - came out white again...
Then clean oil...everything back together around 9:30pm.
We were hoping for the best as we settled down for dinner and drinks.

to a well deserved rest.

The damaged GS made CT. Later we had to jump start it though, and when you let it idle for a bit, the oil pressure light started flashing...
That's it - till next time...

Thanks for sharing XRRX, looks like a seriously fun trip.

I have a question though, with the drowned GS, why remove the fuel tank?
Oil can be drained with the tank on

I can't really answer that...
What I do know is that John removed the right hand intake manifold too ( left was dry), so I pressume he decided to remove the tank to have more work space...😏

Wow! Thank you for the nice ride report. Baviaans has bee on my bucket list for a while now, but the buffalo might make rethink it. Then again, it is not called adventure riding for nothing. Glad you all made it out safe.

a Nice pano picture from Louis where the fearful mud hole was... 😁
At this stage we were debating a "Way forward" with the dead 1200...
