Doing Baviaans and the EC BASH have both long been a bucket list thing with me.   ;)

However every year for some reason the EC Bash falls the same weekend as a shooting competition I attend and as part of a team I could not drop the other guys.  This year however the stars aligned and the venue was Baviaans and the competition date changed – I took it as a sign.  ;D

I made arrangement with Jupiter to join his party and to meet them at Tolbos the Friday morning.

But wait I am getting ahead of myself.  By Wednesday I had not packed a single thing but at least the bike was checked, full of fuel etc.  Late Wednesday night I remembered having taken a photo of my kit for the Reedsdale Bash and printed it out – what a help that was.  :thumleft:
I simply read the list and had the packing done and dusted in less than an hour.  By 11pm I was snoring away…

Transporter and I made arrangements to leave here on the Thursday and ride down to P.E. together and then spend Thursday night there.  He however had some work related problems and withdrew at 99. :deal:

Cave girl and co. spent the Wednesday night at my place and they left before eight hitting gravel straight away.  I however got away at 09H00 and hit the N9 to Cradock to give me enough time for the rest of the route I had sort off mapped out in my head. :patch:

It was COLD (notice the bold lettering) so cold that when I got to Middelburg to fill up I had already cursed myself repeatedly for not zipping in the thermals.  :-\ I filled up and set off to Cradock.  By the time I got there I was famished (must have been the cold) and had a brunch at the Wimpy. As I was leaving Cave Girl and co. arrived.

We said our goodbyes and off I went.
I filled up, deflated the TKC’s and hit the R337 – What a way to really start the trip.  The passes were fairly well maintained and the scenery on a overcast day beautiful.

From Swaershoek Pass you could almost see tomorrow…

When I got the junction to Somerset East / Pearston I decided to take the sub route to S/E.  Apparently there were some Lion farms.

They must have had some rains because every now and then the road made for some interesting mud sections.  ;D ;)

Roaring up a section I was confronted with a boom across the road it took some braking to stop in time, it opened on its own and just as I was going through it closed.  It just missed my head – these things aren’t very bike friendly.

I filled up in Sumerset East and hit the road to the R335 leading to the R400.

The roads were beautifull and made for some nice fast sections.

When I got to the R400 I went across to the Suurberg road.

Just past this junction I came across 2 Kudu Bulls and 6/7 cows.  I even had time to stop take out the camera and still managed to take a picture of 2 in the road.  I made a mental note to slow down a bit. :pot:

Somehow I missed the Suurberg Pass road and ended up at the N10 – I doubled back and found a farmer as he was exiting a camp. “Boetie you are not the first one, every now and then I get a biker riding through my veld chasing his GPS”  :imaposer:– he however directed me and when I asked him about the condition of the road he just said “Common, but with a capital K boetie”. I took it as bad…  ;)
Starting up the pass I became very aware what security lay in traveling with a mate, I really wished for one then.  The Pass was tough in places but overall just course (skurf) with plenty of loose rocks.

It started to rain before I reached the summit and I was already thinking I was a puncture (cut) away from spending the night there in my little green tent.  :deal:

Things however eventually cleared up a bit and I made it to the Hotel in the Pass (the name eludes me).  From here the roads were much better. I pushed a bit and soon found myself pushing it a bit too much trying to out-race the dark.
:patch:

Fuel was also starting to become an issue.  I made it to the PE / Patterson junction and headed for PE.

I had to fill up in Motherwell (I only had 9km left on the tank). Leaving for the N2 the Taxi’s seemed to take pleasure in passing as close as possible :patch: . Eish this new South Africa….

I was spending the night at a friend in Sunridge Park and reached him just as it was dark.  What a day…

Friday morning I hit the road to Patensie.  I met up with Jupiter and Co. at Tolbos and we had a nice breakfast before setting out.  The HP already looked the worst for wear among the other bikes. :ricky:

Jup took the lead and off we went – I was glad I managed to arrange it that I did my first Baviaans with someone who knew it. :thumleft:

The scenery was amazing I was loving Baviaans.  Then we got to the actual gate for Baviaans – idiot… :lamer: :imaposer:

We paid and off we went.

Smitskraal was the first real water crossing and actually went off without the mayor “crisis” I was expecting – well maybe next time I would go first - the guys in front of you just buggers up your nerves.  :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer: Thanks Jup for the picture :thumleft:

It was on the other side of this that KAALVOET made me aware of my rear wheel bearing leaking.  It seemed a lot of oil at the time. :-[

We made our way through Baviaans catching up with each other and taking photos as we went along.  I was soaking it up as much a possible – I was here finally. ;D  ;D

With most of the water crossings the water filled the cylinder head grooves and you could hear the boiling water when you stopped. Music to a Boxer lovers ears.

At the caravan shop I had the best Coke ever. We hit the road and before we knew it we turned off to Doringkloof the BASH venue.

I picked a nice shady spot and set about pitching “home.  It was with the unpacking that I noticed “NIMMO* NC” was now forever part of Baviaans… :p

The venue was to say the least spectacular, lush green lawns, plenty of trees, clean ablution facilities.  And above all FRIENDLY hosts that went out of their way to accommodate us. :thumleft:

Till late Friday night guys were coming in setting up camp and I heard a couple mention how the “dark” (meaning the road to get here time wise) caught them.  Only after dark a group started pitching next to me – turned out to be Veldbrand & DODO and co. It was interesting lying in the tent listening to the “Gautenger” version of how nice the EC guys were… :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer: :peepwall:

Friday night was spent doing what guys do when they meet far away from home – everyone had a blast.
Saturday was spent looking up old friends, making new ones and finding out who was who behind their avatars.  It amazes me how many people you know or know you after a few of these get-togethers.  Also from dealings on the forum etc.  At around 11AM I could hear a pin drop in the camp – this is a BASH not a rally and in a nutshell is why I personally attend.  The greater family was having a weekend… :thumleft:

At the bar I found this – happiness is….

I managed to get some diff oil from Chris the owner and filled up the diff just to make sure I don’t have any problems on my way home – thanks again for that.

The meals were nice and plentiful.  Chris and his helpers really made us feel welcome and looked after our every need.

The skills challenge was the afternoon and gave some insight into how small ladies kick big guys butt… :deal: Thanks for that Jules.

Dinner was being prepared and I was looking forward to having a whole sheep by the time dinner came. :lol8:

The prize draw was cooked by Jules and as per usual  :peepwall: :pot: my number did not come in – luckily the HP had no space so to certain extend – Thanks for that Jules ::).  We had an amazing dinner and I went to bed feeling very “King Nimmo” like with a full belly and a warm heart. :3some:

Sunday morning came and it was COLD – I figured what is the use of getting up and riding in other peoples dust all the way.  I went had a nice warm shower and said goodbyes to friends as they passed. I managed to get away about 09H00, heading to Willowmore.

The roads from there were open and nothing like the Baviaans I had come to know the Friday.  Big Dom’s word of wisdom before the BASH rang true “You have to do the Patensie side otherwise you would not have done Baviaans”.  There is a world of difference between the 2 sides.

I made Willowmore and filled up then took the Steytlerville road R329 and turned off onto the Miller road to do the Swanepoelspoort.  These roads were a hidden gem  :drif: – I was so glad I decided on doing it.

Often on the family holiday I see these mountains at Willowmore and just race pass, this time I was exploring the hidden roads and finding the beauty that lays just beyond the horizon.

From Klipplaat I headed to Graaff Reinet via Marais and Kendrew – these roads were open and fast.

I reached GR just after 15H00 and from there hit the N9 back home to get here just as the sun set.

After unpacking and finding my feet I got news that a local “oom” I knew and who has always been a friend to me had had  a heart attack and died that same afternoon here in my home town. We spent many a hour fiddling on his bike and exchanging stories -  so NOS this is dedicated to you, I know you would have loved to have heard about this epic RR.

Safe trip my friend...

Thanks again to all concerned see you next year  :thumleft:

Another great RR! Fantastic photos as well!  :thumleft:

:thumleft:

GREAT RR.

Dankie.

Ek het lekker hier gesit en lag en giggel soos n laaitie met sy eerste SCOPE tydskrif.

Great RR and was good to see you again and one of three HP2s there ... home turf for these beasts and good to see them being used for whatnthey were designed for. Also good to see you did Zuurberg etc and saw some of our other secrets. What's the prognosis on the final drive bearing?
