Belfast / Lydenburg/ Long Tom / Sabie road

I'm going to the Oos Transvaal in a few weeks but can only leave after work.
Has anyone recently used the Belfast / Lydenburg/ Long Tom / Sabie road.
I'm in two minds whether to take the shorter route in the dark or stay on the N4 till after Sappi and pay the tolls.  ???
