Best route to go

Sorry this will not be for biking but for a holiday trip with the family. I'm based in Langebaan and needs to know which roads are the safest and shortest to the Margate region. The N2 looks great but the last section to Kokstad seems to be very rural (donkies). Currently looking at N1 up to Gariep then down Burgersdorp to Kokstad!
