- Honda CRF-1000L Africa Twin
Brand: 2001 F650GS Dakar
Millage: 96 400km
I bought this bike in 2012 with ±30 000km. To my knowledge I am the third owner. This was my first “big” bike after my chines 125cc Skygo. For the first two years of ownership this was my only transport and was used as commuter during the week and adventure bike over the weekends. The bike always slept in a garage. In 2014 I started to use the bike only for weekend trips and the odd work trip. This BMW took me all over the country en never left me stranded next to the road, a very trusty steed.
Maintenance:
The bike was serviced every 5000km or annually with Castrol Activo 10w-40 oil and later (last 20 000km) with Ravenol 10W-40. Air and oil filter was replaced with every service. Valve clearances was done every 20 000km. Last valve clearance service was done on 85 000km.
I kept losing the rear lense of the tail light and out of frustration I did a rebuild of the tail light. Original unit is available without the red lense.
Honesty section:
I bought this bike with a hairline crack in the frame on the upper right-hand side. I had this welded (reinforced) at ±35 000km when I did the first service. As a precaution the left-hand side was also reinforced with a steel plate. No issues since then, even on very bad roads.
There are ugly stains from battery acid (Well known issue on the F650gs) on the right-hand side engine cover, I tried to cover it with some silver paint.
Last winter I gave the handlebars, footpegs, pannier frames, and mirrors a fresh coat of paint. I. Did not remove the centerstand and it is looking a little bad compared to the rest of the bike.
The battery was replaced in April last year, but I do not completely trust this battery, I got it from our local battery center for a very good price, but it is not a brand I am familiar with. Previously I used Yuasa batteries with a good result.
This bike does have some minor scratches and marks. I had two side stand incidents and one slow speed fall on a sandy patch on the Old Postal route.
Reason for selling:
After 12 years of ownership, I upgraded to a CRF1100 Africa Twin.
Price:
R33 000. I am going to advertise it on FB for a little bit more.
Bike is on my name and license up to date.
If I do not get my price, I am going to keep it in my garage for friends and family to use on day trips with me.
I am based in Malmesbury, the bike is still sleeping in my garage, the new Honda is standing outside.

- Rear master brake cylinder was rebuilt ±10 000km ago.
- Rear shock was rebuilt by Mike Fuchs (Superfoxi) at 90 000km, coupled with the swingarm and linkage bearings. Mike “tuned” the shock for my 100kg weight + luggage.
- Waterpump was done last year. I did the waterpump job three times in my 66 000km of ownership. The flexible oil return pipe modification was also done with my first waterpump job.
- Steeringhead bearings was done about 2000km ago. (This is a frequent job, lasts about 10 000km on corrugated roads).
- Wheel bearings (front and rear) replaced on 80 000km.
- This bike does not use any oil and the clutch is still 100%.
- Brake pads: ±50% left
- EK x-ring Chain and sprockets will give you another 5000km-10000km
- Dunlop D606 and Mitas E07+ only done about 1000km and is less than a year old.

- Wide footpegs
- Zeta hand guards
- Handlebar raisers
- Centerstand
- Additional clutch cable fitted
- Foam grips with cruise control grip
- Braided front brake hose.
- Voltmeter with switch (this can be changed to a usb plug)
