BMW Airhead R80 G/S for sale - 1982
My much loved and pimped Monolever R80 G/S is for sale.
List of history – as far as I know.
I bought it with 32 000 on the clocks.
After a few breakdowns on various trips, I took the bike to Altus Pienaar (Dustdevil)in Aug 2008 for a complete engine overhaul.
New pistons, cylinders, rings, lead free valve seats, new valves, valve guides, big end bearings were fitted.
The crank, conrods and pistons were weight balanced and the carb was overhauled.
Mileage at this stage about 35 000 km.
In October 2008 the gearbox packed up and a complete overhaul was done:
Replaced
Input shaft
Primary gear
Thrust adapter
Intermediate shaft
Clutch piston
Fork selector
Selector shaft
All bearings
All seals
At the same time
New timing chain
Rail
Tensioner
Alternator brush set fitted.
Since then I have done almost 25000 km on longish 2/3/4/ day trips (no commuting).
The bike did a 17 day trip in Namibia - 4 000 km (including over van Zyl’s Pass!), and then the damn driveshaft broke on the Angolan border!
One I recovered the bike, back to Altus – brand new driveshaft fitted and total overhaul of the final drive.
Mileage now reads 59 200 km.

R100 forks with Race Tec GOLD VALVE DAMPING emulators fitted
Custom fork brace
210 mm brake disc Nissin caliper - real brakes.
12V power outlet plug for GPS
100mm bar raisers - solid and high
Dyna brown ignition coil
New ICU
Valve seats converted to use unleaded petrol
Quietening rubbers fitted to cylinder fins
Bashplate –Aluminium
Double aluminium layer welded to tappet covers for more sliding resistance.
Subframe reinforced
Lowered footpegs
Widened foot pegs
New exhaust collector box - ceramic coated
New headers ceramic coated
Raised seat
Oversize rear brake pedal
Extended gear lever
Final drive vented to under seat
Starter motor overhauled
MP suspension rear shock. Complete Overhauled 1000 km ago.
New ignition lock
New left side electrical perch,
Scorch Silencer
Unfilter air filter
New 2 in 1 collector box – ceramic coated.
Front alternator cover ceramic coated.
Rear wheel offset 10mm for 140 wide tyre TKC 80 with 30% left
Oil filler point added on tappet cover
Fuel tank sight glass.
The bike is set up for a taller rider, but you could change this.
Why am I selling………….. the bike is geared for longer trips.
I am planning to do more 2 day trips, and I wanted a lighter more offroad bike.
