This is one of the main reasons I bought my first BMW 2 years ago, and is now the main reason I'll never buy another one.
I currently own a 2008 GSA which I am very happy with(previously a normal R1200GS), a X Country and a X Challenge.
When I looked at the X Country for my wife it was going for 74000 with ABS. A couple of months later it was going for 61000 on the road with ABS, that's a 13000 saving, or just over 20%. So I bought one. Being told it was a once of, unusual special deal.
A couple of months later I wanted a lighter more agile bike for myself for some fun, and invested in the X Challenge, which was going at 77000 with ABS.
7 months later I decide I'd like something new and smaller(not the 8hr service 450) and I see that the price of the Challenge has now been dropped to 60000, that's just short of 30% and the bike has not even been discontinued!
How on earth is a person supposed to get a good resale price for your bike if you decide to sell? I really think this is a k*k thing for BMW SA to have done.
After chatting to a few people I see the same has happened to some of the BM road bikes
This prompted me to do some research on the net, and the proof was there, hundreds of 2nd hand BM's for sale in the dual purpose range, KTM, very few, and the KTMs seem to retain there value.
So for me, my future will be orange, I think life is better on the dark side, your investment certainly is.
