So I bought a new set of tyres for my 660 Tenere and decided to fit them myself. After taking off the rear wheel I noticed that the hub, sprocket and all that is very dirty and there is no way that I'll get the axle back in without getting some of the accumulated dirt in as well.

So cleaning the whole thing is the obvious answer. Is there a specific type of grease I need to use on the axle after cleaning?
