correctly tensioning a chain without a paddock stand

in the SMC R manual they say to check tension on the side stand,  but then to put up to set it.
i don't have a side stand,  and since getting married i am not allowed out,  EVER.
this means Groenie hasn't been tightening the chain for me.
is a paddock stand really necessary?
