Dakar Centre Stand

After searching for different types and costs and seeing some 'home made' stands being sold here my head starts questioning HOW REALLY necessary is a centre stand?

If I have a puncture off road on a ride, surely I can lie the bike down - do whats needed there?

Also for cleaning, I've got a spare jack that I use anyway. It lifts the rear wheel and allows me to spin it without any problems.

Any suggestions? Is there something I'm missing here?  ???
