After a soggy previous day I opted to ride the Knysna forest route (Prince Alfred Pass).
Fortunately I had researched on google earth to find the correct turn-off which, I would have thought it was a tourist attraction so it would be signposted from the N2- is not. It is just another turn-off marked by many minibus taxis - I would never have found it otherwise.
Some distance uphill the dirt road began. It was apparent that it had rained here too as the ground was damp - yippee! no dust! But plenty of potholes!
Some years ago I rode here on a few occasions on my Transalp with much better suspension, so I was not really prepared for the rough ride on the NC700x being essentially a commuter and not an Adventurer.
The Michelin Road 6 tyres proved very stable even in slightly muddy conditions albeit at lower speed, but fast enough that I could look around - If I want to speed I will do it on a track - I prefer to enjoy the scenery.
Not wanting to bore the viewer, I have selected only parts of the ride to give a general impression of the ride and then increased the playback speed mostly.
Due to the heavily overcast sky in some places the scene became rather dark - this is a forested area, but for the most part the Action 3 did a good job. I have it mounted on the outside of the wind shield for optimal visuals.
After having negotiated a number of erosion ditches I encountered a small group of baboons who, waved and cheered me on as by now I was quite grumpy from all the bumps and jumps and soon I reached the weird structure beside the road at the junction of the road to Plettenberg bay where I turned off. The road surface here was much rougher with plenty of loose stones.
What a difference it made when I finally got back on the tarred road - like riding on .... well...something smooth!
Once back on the N2 I stopped for refreshment at Craggs, returning to my motorcycle to find it surrounded by huge trucks.
Soon on my way towards Natures Valley along the Groot Rivier pass, then on through the Bloukrans pass, slightly faster than I would normally as by now my situpon waars a little sour. I rejoined the N2 and the traffic. And the rain.
You will agree that it is not much fun riding in the rain behind a slow truck with heavy wind buffeting you and visibility at a minimum.
Thankfully I approached Humansdorp -on fumes as my fuel was now low and my spirit was lower from being wet through and cold and fatigued. What a relief to pull in at the fuel station!
