Your first thought may be: No! Not another project in Gix's grudge. But this is a special one. Dieter wants to tag along on our rides, but has a few challenges to say the least. Read more here - https://wilddog.net.za/forum/index.php?topic=77564.0
With the help of a lot of people we are building him a sidecar and this thread will document the progress.
Let's start with the mount. Dodo generously offered his 1100GS to carry the sidecar. He bought the bike on the day his son was born, so it has some sentimental value to him.
I found a lot of info on advrider and intend to copy, borrow, steal or beg for ideas from the interweb and some experts I have already made contact with. Feel free to chip in with advice, encouragement, money, parts, services, etc.
Sidecars aren't cheap. A real basic hack like this one from Dauntless will set you back $2500 plus $800 for the mounts. That means you're looking at R30K+ to land it here in Sefrika. We don't have that amount of spare change lying around.
One the major design considerations will be Dieter's safety. He can't stick out a hand to stop a branch from slapping him in the face and we don't want him breaking his neck again.
Another one is access for his wheelchair. Quite an impressive piece of kit.
It's made locally by Radical Mobility and not cheap at all. The sidecar will have a ramp that allows him entry from the rear and the ramp will then also close up behind him to help keep him inside. The wheelchair has to be secured properly as well.
The weight is also quite considerable. Dieter weighs around 80kg, his chair another 110 and the sidecar at least 100+kg. So we need a moerse shock and sturdy mounts. That's over 300kg added to the GS's 200 odd. A Ural weighs around 330kg and with the driver and passenger that goes over half a ton. It does fine with only 40hp! (Similar to a KLR!?)
So, show some support please!
